*SLIGHTLY LONG READ* For the enthusiast who understands preventive maintenance > jugaad I bought this car in 2020 from a fellow car lover in Gurgaon. And when I say car lover, I mean the kind who had only one covered parking - and still kept the Laura in the shade while his wife’s newer car stood outside in the open. That’s the level of respect this machine commanded. At the time of purchase, it had ~75,000 km on the odo. Lockdown happened soon after, so till 2022 it was driven occasionally. Since then, it has proudly served as my daily driver - and what a confident daily it has been. This was originally meant to be my weekend car. It quietly upgraded itself to daily driver status. The Important Part - Maintenance (aka “Why this one is different”) I don’t believe in waiting for parts to fail dramatically on a highway. If something is known to fail, I fix it before it does. Especially when it comes to VAG cars - neglect them and they’ll empty your wallet; maintain them and they’ll reward you for years. Apart from regular services (always at authorized Skoda service centers with proper records), here’s what has been done: 1️⃣ Full Fluid Overhaul (at purchase) Immediately after buying, I got all fluids replaced - engine oil, gearbox oil, coolant, brake fluid - everything. Fuel filter replaced too (because we all know Indian fuel quality deserves caution). 2️⃣ The “Ticking Time Bomb” - Timing Chain Tensioner (DONE) If you know 1.8 TSI engines of this era, you know the story. The infamous timing chain tensioner issue has kept many owners awake at night. Since it’s an interference engine, a timing jump can mean serious internal damage. I didn’t wait for “symptoms”. Got the entire timing chain job done at Skoda authorized service center. I personally ensured their most experienced ustaad handled it - not a rookie. Watching him measure link distances with a vernier caliper while calibrating timing was oddly satisfying. Proper job. No shortcuts. Sleep peacefully. This one is sorted. 3️⃣ Cooling System Refresh (Preventive) At ~85,000 km, I noticed a few coolant droplets occasionally. Service center said I could top up 200ml every few thousand kms and continue. I said no. Replaced proactively: Complete water pump assembly (with thermostat) Radiator Coolant expansion tank Cooling system? Sorted for years. 4️⃣ Tyres - Sensible Upgrade I didn’t believe in upsizing wheels just for looks. Bigger wheels = more rotational mass = slower acceleration and compromised mileage. Stayed with stock size (195 section is more than adequate for Indian roads and this car’s dynamics). Installed Continental UltraContact 6 at ~95,000 km. Used ~20,000 km so far. Still ~50% tread easily left. 5️⃣ Clutch Cylinders Known to give up around 1 lakh kms. Replaced proactively. 6️⃣ New Exide Battery Replaced at ~1,10,000 km. Still under warranty - warranty card available. Timing chain - Done Water pump - Done Radiator - Done Clutch cylinders - Done Tyres - Done Battery - Done Mechanically, this car is sorted for the next many years. Why No Mods? Because reliability > Instagram. No retunes. No performance mods. No questionable upgrades. Kept completely stock so it remains dependable as a daily driver. How It Drives This 1.8L TSI is still an absolute gem. City mileage: 12-13 kmpl (with a light foot) Highway: ~16 kmpl comfortably Solid German build. These older Skodas feel like tanks. Yes, parts are expensive compared to some brands - but they last. Maintain them properly and they won’t trouble you. People who skip preventive maintenance later complain about VAG costs. This car has not been that car. Why Am I Selling? Honestly? I wouldn’t have - if not for the NGT rule. This car has been part of my daily life for 6 years. I’m listing it hoping it goes to someone who understands what a well-maintained VAG machine feels like.
